There are several different types of braces available today. Braces, also called orthodontics, can be used to straighten crooked teeth, bracesclose large gaps between teeth or correct a misaligned bite, in which the top and bottom row of teeth do not line up properly. If you need braces to correct any of these dental concerns, you don’t necessarily need to visit an orthodontist. At Silver Oaks Dentistry in San Antonio, TX Dr. Emanuel Dehelean can help you select the right type of braces for your needs.

Types of Braces

Braces are a common orthodontic method for straightening teeth and correcting misaligned bites. The different types of braces include traditional metal braces, clear aligners, such as Invisalign, lingual braces and clear ceramic braces. Based on your specific dental needs, your San Antonio dentist can advise you on which type of braces might work best for you.

Metal braces, clear braces and lingual braces are all similar to one another. These different types of braces each use brackets and wires to move the teeth. For both metal braces and clear braces, the brackets and wires are placed on the front of the teeth. The main difference between the two is that the brackets for clear braces are made from white ceramic that blends in with the teeth, making them less noticeable than the silver brackets of metal braces. For lingual braces, the brackets and wires are even less noticeable as they are placed on the backs of the teeth.

A fourth type of braces utilizes clear aligners to straighten the teeth and close up gaps. A name brand of clear aligners that many people are familiar with is Invisalign, but there are other brands that work the same way. Clear aligners utilize trays that fit over the top and bottom rows of teeth. The trays are made from soft plastic and are custom fit to each patient’s teeth. A major advantage of clear aligners is that they are removable, which makes brushing easier and prevents food from getting trapped in the aligners when eating.

There are many different types of braces to suit everyone’s needs. To learn more about which type of braces might be right for you, speak with Dr. Dehelean, your San Antonio, TX dentist. To schedule an appointment, contact Silver Oaks Dentistry by calling (210) 656-4699.

If you’re contemplating how Invisaligncould improve your smile but you still have some questions about how the treatment process works, then you’ve come to the right place. We answer all of your most frequent questions regarding these clear braces, and whether getting Invisalign in San Antonio is the right step for your smile.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of customized clear aligners that help to shift teeth back to their proper alignment. Invisalign treats a host of different malocclusions including crowding, gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, overbites, underbites and crossbites.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign aligners use controlled force to move your teeth to their proper place. The patented thermoplastic design of these aligners is what truly makes them effective in shifting teeth.

What should I expect from the treatment process?

Once Invisalign has been deemed a proper course of action for your smile, we will take X-rays and impressions of your teeth to decide on the best treatment plan to give you a straighter smile. These specifications will then be sent to a lab for fabrication.
Once your Invisalign has been created, you will be fitted with your first aligner to make sure everything fits properly. You will wear each aligner for about two weeks before switching to the next aligner in the series. Each aligner will slowly shift your teeth, which you will start to notice over time.

What is the average length of treatment?

For adults, Invisalign usually takes a year for the entire treatment. For teens interested in Invisalign, their length of treatment will be the same as it would be if they wore traditional braces (approximately a year and a half to two years).

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

The major advantage is that Invisalign is virtually invisible, so no one will notice your aligners like they would if you were wearing metal braces. Also, since these retainers are removable, you don’t have any dietary restrictions. Enjoy any foods you want, just make sure to remove your aligners beforehand (and always brush or rinse out your mouth before putting your Invisalign back in!).
Also, since you can remove Invisalign, your oral routine doesn’t have to change. You can still brush and floss exactly as you did before braces.

How do I care for my clear aligners?

You should be wearing your aligners about 22 hours a day; however, when you do remove them, make sure you do not leave your aligners any place that is warmer than your mouth (e.g. a car on a hot summer day). Exposing them to extreme temperatures will damage them. Also clean your aligners with a toothbrush and soap whenever you remove them.

Will my insurance company cover my Invisalign treatment in San Antonio?

Most dental coverage will pay for a portion of your Invisalign treatment. However, before starting treatment, contact your insurance provider to make sure your plan covers Invisalign.
