What is scaling?
During the scaling portion of your procedure, our San Antonio general dentist will use both ultrasonic and manual tools to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of the teeth and under the gum line. These ultrasonic tools use vibrations to remove buildup more efficiently and the manual tools may be used afterward to take care of anything that still remains.
What is root planing?
During root planing we smooth the surface of the tooth roots to reduce the amount of areas where plaque and tartar can thrive.
Will this treatment hurt?
Most patients are relieved to hear that this deep cleaning treatment can be performed under local anesthesia, so the gums will be numb prior to the procedure. You shouldn’t feel discomfort during this treatment.
If you find that your teeth are more sensitive after scaling and root planing, we may recommend using desensitizing toothpaste.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
A lot will depend on the severity of your symptoms. This treatment can take anywhere from two to four visits to complete. Since scaling and root planing can be time-consuming, getting this entire treatment completed in just one visit isn’t always ideal for the patient. However, once treatment is over most patients find that their gum disease is gone. Of course, maintenance treatments and routine visits are still part of caring for your gums to make sure that infection doesn’t set in.
